New 'Cuina Gaig' at the Mercer Hotel Casa Torner i Güell in Vilafranca del Penedès

​Chef Carles Gaig, one of the models of contemporary Catalan cuisine, has chosen the Penedès to inaugurate the new 'Cuina Gaig - Casa Torner i Güell', from May 19th​

Carles Gaig is a model of Catalan cooking. With more than five decades on the front lines of haute cuisine, he is considered a classic among his clients and a master among his colleagues.

He is heir to a tradition that began at the end of the 19th century, when the family opened an inn at Barcelona’s Horta neighborhood. Over the years it has become an institution due to its respect for classic recipes and its special attention to the product: “My dishes are based on traditional Catalan cuisine. To move forward, we have to look to the past” he says. A traditional and respectful cuisine where the raw material stands out.

In the new 'Cuina Gaig - Casa Torner i Güell' in Vilafranca, the chef offers some of the best dishes from the traditional Catalan cookbook and some of his classics such as the ' Cardinal’s macaroni' or the 'Gaig’s cannelloni'. Flavors with an extraordinary personality, identified with the territory and its idiosyncrasy, accompanied by wines and cavas from the Penedès region.

Starters such as cod fritters or roast croquettes, fish dishes such as stuffed squid or seafood rice with crayfish, meat dishes such as pork trotters with turnips, meatballs with cuttlefish or Penedès rooster breast with shiitakes and desserts such as Catalan cream or Cream lionesses are just some examples of what we can find on the menu.

On Saturdays, market day in Vilafranca -a commercial tradition since medieval times- famous 'knife and fork' breakfasts are served, for you to enjoy a local style brunch, as la Martinet local sausage with beans, cod with “sanfaina” and chickpeas, Fried eggs, pork chop and beans, or “Cap i pota” and cod tripe stew.

The restaurant at the Mercer Hotel Casa Torner i Güell -located on Rambla de Sant Francesc, 26 in Vilafranca- has two different spaces: the living room and the glazed terrace surrounded by a natural environment, where food lovers can enjoy a more than pleasant experience.

The Mercer Casa Torner i Güell is a small and quiet hotel set in the historic center of Vilafranca del Penedès, in a modernist building from 1884. It’s an eclectic architectural work in which Modernist aspects predominate. It was one of the first houses built with exposed brick, ceramic on the façade and wrought iron on the balconies, three characteristics of the local Modernist architecture.

The Torner i Güell property, which is part of the Inventory of the Catalan Architectural Heritage, was built in the area where the medieval wall was located in the past, on the initiative of Antoni Torner y Güell and directed by Josep Inglada y Estrada.

Its reconversion highlights the original nobility of the building and, at the same time, introduces a contemporary sense through the materials, the light inputs and the interior design. The hotel has 17 rooms and suites with views to the Rambla. Spacious, bright, functional and soundproofed rooms for a pleasant stay, both for leisure and work.

The Mercer Casa Torner i Güell also has a patio, an adapted elevator and a parking near the property. The hotel also offers breakfast service.

About Carles Gaig

Born surrounded by cooks in the Horta neighborhood of Barcelona, he is heir to a saga of restaurateurs since 1869. His family ran the “Gaig’s Tavern”, an old popular food house, where he learned the traditional Catalan cookbook from his great-grandmother and his mother, especially the cannelloni recipe, one of his most emblematic dishes that he has been cooking since the beginning.

Over the years, Carles Gaig develops the culinary knowledge through a personal cuisine that has obtained multiple awards.

Chef runs restaurants in Barcelona, Singapore and La Cerdanya. In 2020, he merged his career to Mercer Hoteles group, with the opening of the Gaig Restaurant in the Mercer Hotel Torre del Remei 5*GL (where he has just been recognized with a “Sol Repsol” award). Now the chef opens his 'Cuina Gaig - Casa Torner i Güell' in Vilafranca.
